Chapter Eleven

“You need to tell me right now if you still want me to try harder to stay away,” he murmured, his lips brushing hers.

Halle sucked in a quiet breath, hoping her heart would find its way back to her chest. He was giving her an out, an opportunity to close the door on whatever was about to transpire between them.

“And if I tell you I don’t want you to try at all?”

Panic thudded in her chest when a groan vibrated in Cooper’s throat. It was a primitive sound, one that resonated in her core and promised so much more than she thought she was ready for.

Cooper pushed her hair behind her shoulders and licked his lips. Yes, god yes, she was ready for this—she needed it.

Seconds passed, and she didn’t know if he was giving her a chance to change her mind, or if he’d already changed his. Then his knuckles fluttered down her sides and explored the skin below her belly button.

“Then I’ll lay you in bed, strip you bare, and relive the memory of the first time I had you. The memory that branded us both.” Leaning down, he nipped her ear, kissed it soothingly, then whispered, “I’ll make you come hard, and I’ll make you scream loud. I’ll bury myself deep inside you, and I won’t stop until we’ve created a new memory.”

She closed her eyes at the heavy promise in his words. Cooper’s body bowed over hers, the muscles of his lower back tightening and dancing beneath her splayed hands. “Will we survive it?” she breathed as his lips brushed the side of her neck, his nose nuzzling the curve until he found just the right spot to press his lips.

A somber whisper hesitated on his tongue. “I don’t think so, Hal.” The warmth of his breath bathed her with the truth. This would hurt, and there would be no coming back from it. She knew without a doubt that regret would follow, and that it would forever taint her memory of Cooper.

Her bravery had been flawed for so long, but not anymore. She knew the repercussions of his touch, and she understood the risk.

“Then I don’t want to survive anymore.”

His head snapped up. “Babe…”

As she raised up on her toes, she pressed her mouth to his. He didn’t move as she tended to his bottom lip, then his top, licking, and sucking, and nibbling.

It was as if a switch had been flipped inside him, and everything happened at once, leaving her mind trying to play catch up with her body. Cooper groaned, his mouth parted, his tongue claimed hers, and the next thing she knew, she was in his arms, being lowered onto her bed.

He tugged her T-shirt up with his teeth. “I think about it, you know.”

Her breathing halted when he stopped to nip at her belly button, dipping the tip of his tongue inside. “About what?” she asked, not sure if she cared for the answer or not. She just didn’t want him to stop the blissful torture his mouth was putting her through.
